Job Description


Wild East is a nature conservation charity based in East Anglia that is dedicated to the protection, preservation and creation of wildlife areas. We are seeking to recruit a full time, freelance Education Lead for our Schools Program, this highly motivated person will share the values and goals of Wild East with an audience of teachers and their students aged 7 – 16 years.


The successful candidate will have a demonstrated passion for the environment with ideally at least 3+ years in the environment / education sector and will be required to help build a best in class program that has nationwide ambitions. The candidate will also be required to take an active role in the creation and development of course content so the ability to think strategically and generate tangible ideas is also key. The skills to engage a crowd and add positive disruption to the classroom environment is a must and preferred candidates will have strong social media/digital skills. Fundraising and activism experience may also beneficial. 


Wild East is a progressive charity with a results oriented, start-up mentality, a successful candidate will need to demonstrate a ‘get it done’ attitude with an ability to roll up their sleeves and dig in! 


The day to day role will require travel to schools across the East Anglia region so applicants must have their own car and a full, clean driver’s license. Proof of all relevant safety certification will also be required (DBS, first aid training etc.) and full checks will be made.

Job Type: Freelance, Full Time for 12 months + from start date


Hours: 36 hours per week 


Renumeration: £22.2k per annum, freelance contract length 10months + (subject to project funding) 


Responsible to: Wild East Education Program Manager & Board of Trustees 


Reports to: Wild East Education Program Manager & Board of Trustees


Purpose of this role: To co-develop and execute a best in class Schools Program for students age 7+. To build strong links with the schools in the local area and visit these schools to conduct the Wild East, Wilder Schools Program sessions. This will involve creating and presenting interactive content, demonstrations and building a positive, long lasting relationship with the schools involved. 


Duties of the Post


The main duties of the post will include: 


  1. Develop, organise, and deliver interactive outreach sessions for school students aged 7 to 16 and teachers.
  2. Build and maintain strong links with the schools in the East Anglian region and understand and document what their needs are.
  3. Coordinate and deliver a programme of activity for the local schools which meets the aims of the Wild East Wilder Schools Program.
  4. Work with the Wild East team to coordinate a range of activities in addition to the schools outreach sessions that complement each other and meet the targets of the program.
  5. To design and carry delivery of interactive sessions to students, including assemblies, as well as full sized classes and smaller groups that are outside the traditional school circuit such as summer clubs etc. This will also include delivery to other stakeholders such as parents and teachers. This may include delivery via virtual platforms.
  6. To work collaboratively with the wider team, and partner institutions, to develop and deliver a range of activities designed to meet the needs of the participating students. 
  7. Work with outside agencies and educational institutions in East Anglia to support outreach activities. 
  8. Develop appropriate resources and presentations to support students and deliver to a wide range of stakeholders e.g. students, parents, teachers.
  9. Manage the activity budget for schools and ensure all activity is accurately targeted, tracked and evaluated.
  10. Ensure that evaluation is embedded within all projects to ensure that interactive sessions are evidence led and their impact is effectively evaluated
  11. Attend outreach events and represent Wild East. 
  12. Ensure adequate safeguarding is planned and implemented at all times. This may include completing risk assessments etc. 
  13. Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the School’s Program Manager/Director, Strategic Director and Trustees.
  14. These duties are a guide to the work that the post holder will initially be required to undertake. They may be changed from time to time to meet changing circumstances.

Must Haves


Degree of equivalent qualification:
 

  • Child protection/safeguarding training
  • Experience of arranging education projects, activities or events
  • Experience of working within the education sector
    (ideally 3+ years)
  • Experience of working within the primary school sector
  • Experience of working with diverse groups of young people
  • An understanding of the school curriculum at key stages 3 to 5
  • Experience of public speaking, preferably to a range of school aged audiences
  • A knowledge, understanding and passion for conservation, rewilding, the environment, climate change, regenerative farming, local geography
  • An understanding of working with data to evidence impact
  • Willingness to travel within the East Anglia region
  • Willingness to work outside of normal office hours when required
  • The ability to fulfil the requirements of an Enhanced DBS Disclosure check
  • Access to a car for work purposes
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Excellent written, oral and presentation skills
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel databases and PowerPoint
  • Social media awareness and ability to take on a social media management role where required 
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
    Flexibility, adaptability and the ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Possession of a full, UK-valid driving licence in order to travel to remote locations and transport promotional equipment to and from events
  • Being able to prioritise workload and work on multiple tasks
